Ayurveda and weight reduction

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that means Veda or knowledge of how to lead a long, beneficial, happy and comfortable life. As it is based on the cycles and rhythms of nature, the person practicing it is in harmony with nature, moving smoothly along with the flow of God's creation.
Ayurveda is as old as our world system itself. In recorded human civilisation, the science of ayurveda has been around for over 6,000 years. Man learnt about life and living from and with nature itself. He gave prime importance to the air he breathed, the water he drank and the food he ate. The principle of using these resources for maximum comfort and well-being is what ayurveda is all about. That is why it is also called 'the science of life'. Ayurveda believes in the maxim of 'a healthy mind in a healthy body', along with healthy emotional, intellectual and spiritual domains.

The chief cause of obesity or overweight is often overeating, irregular eating habits and not following the rules of eating such as improper mixing of food items in one meal.

In ayurveda, Charak Samhita describes eight different types of bodies that are disease prone. Out of these, the obese body is described as the one afflicted with the most diseases and troubles. Obesity is the condition or physical state of the body when excessive deposition of fat takes place in the adipose tissue.

Extra fat puts a strain on the heart, kidneys, liver and the joints such as the hips, knees and ankles and thus, overweight people are susceptible to several diseases like coronary thrombosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, gout, liver and gall bladder disorders. Chief cause of obesity is overeating, irregular eating habits and not following the rules of eating or mixing non-compatible food items in one meal.

Ayurveda is truly holistic, since it works not only at the physical domain, to make people look good, but also with emotional and mental domains and makes them holistically complete.
Unlike the modern view, which propagates 'no disease, then healthy' concept, the basic premise of ayurveda is that good health is not just absence of disease. Ayurveda first analyses an individual's mental and physical type, and then attempts to optimise physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Maintaining the balance between the three humours, or doshas - vata (air), pitta (digestive fire) and kapha (phelgm) brings about this state. According to ayurveda specialists, these doshas are the governing principles of life and help bring the mind, body and emotions into harmony with each other.

These are some of the benefits gained by following a diet pattern and lifestyle recommended by ayurveda :

Weight Reduction: Obesity is a modern-day ailment. Ayurveda does not just help reduce weight, but helps attain the ideal weight - weight is lost if there is too much and gained when there is too little.

Longevity: Ayurvedic principles work at eliminating diseases from the body and maintaining an ideal balance between the three doshas. A fit and healthy mind and body, which are free of disease automatically means increased youthfulness and age retarding.

Healing: Ayurvedic principles help in healing diseases holistically. Also they help in increasing the body's resistance to disease.

Mood enhancer: Ayurveda brings a sense of harmony between the mind and body and helps in lifting sagging spirits as it makes you feel positive with sense of wellness.

Preventive: Ayurvedic practices are both prophylactic as well as preventive dealing with even serious ailments.
